The work done by the participants of the workshop organized three foundations: German STATISTICS, Israeli Metukenet and Common Europe Foundation. Thanks to them, held a two-week youth activities dedicated to the fight against discrimination and promoting tolerance. For a week the participants – five Poles, Germans and four of five Israelis – were in Germany, and for a week – in Warsaw. Completion was to perform, under the direction of Marcin Malicki graffiti artists, the mural with the image of Jan Karski.
– Such workshops initiative came from representatives of the foundation Metukenet of Israel, which believes that the program offers young Israelis in Poland is very poor. They visit the six camps in three days and actually see nothing more. Thanks to the workshop a group of young Israelis had the opportunity to spend a week in Warsaw, know the city and people. The figure Jan Karski, a hero of our mural, very fit to the subject of our workshops on tolerance and the fight against discrimination. For us, Jan Karski is a symbol of a man who tried to help everyone, without regard to creed and nationality – said Lukasz Grajewski of Common Europe Foundation.
Grajewski added that the autumn will be another round of workshops, and Prague mural will be supplemented with the subtitle “Who does not condemn, that condones” in German and Hebrew.

The building at Lublin 30/32, right by the station Warsaw East, is a theater and artists’ studios. – It was not until last night, we learned that during the occupation, at this point, the Germans organized a temporary camp for exported to the Treblinka extermination camp, which gave a new dimension to our muralowi – said Grajewski.

Jan Karski (actually John Kozielewski) was born on 24 April 1914. Lodz. In 1935. Graduated in law and diplomacy at the University of Lwow. Later, he worked as a clerk in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In September 1939. Artillery as a soldier got into Soviet captivity. Two months later, he came down the transport and returned to Warsaw, where he began his underground activity. Due to the excellent memory and knowledge of the duties entrusted courier authorities Polish Underground State. In January 1940. Went to Paris and Angers.
During another mission to France, was arrested by the Gestapo. After the brutal interrogation of attempted suicide, fearing that during subsequent torture can tell the Germans relevant information. Resuscitated went to the prison hospital, from which he was released thanks to the action of the Union of Armed Struggle.
In 1942. Pseudonym Jan Karski went on another mission, this time to the UK and the USA. One of his main tasks was to inform the Allies about the tragic situation of the Jews under German occupation. Collecting information on this topic, twice escaped the Warsaw ghetto and transit camp in Izbica.
The relationship of the witness gave a number of American and British politicians, journalists and artists. He met, among others, with the head of the British Ministry of Foreign Affairs Anthony Eden and President Franklin Delano Roosevelt USA. His dramatic appeals for help for the Jewish people, however, have not yielded results.
After the war Karski remained in exile in the United States. He took a degree in political science and his doctorate at Georgetown University, where he spent a further 40 years as professor of international relations and the theory of communism. Among his students were, among others, future president Bill Clinton.
Karski was also the author of several books. He has received many prestigious awards, among others, the title of Righteous Among the Nations; was a Knight of the Order of the White Eagle, and an honorary citizen of Israel. He died in 2000., Washington.
Year 2014 was established by the Sejm Year Jan Karski.
