The Cassini spacecraft tracked the highest peak of Titan, Saturn’s largest moon. It is 3337 m high.
The highest peak of Titan is located in the mountain range called Mithrim Montes. All they are making up the band rise to approx. 3000 m in height. To discover served the data collected by the measuring equipment Cassini spacecraft, which is able to break through the thick atmosphere of the moon.
– It is not only the highest peak, which we have found to date, but probably the highest on Titan. Do not expect to find anything higher – said Stephen Wall, deputy head of the Cassini mission.
The highest mountains of Titan are located near the equator. The researchers tracked other peaks of similar height to Mithrim Montes. The original purpose of the observation was different – scientists want to track active zones in the crust of Saturn’s moon. The fact that on Titan are so high peaks indicates that Saturn’s moon may still be subject to tectonic processes.
