Almost everyone, while school education, met the periodic table of elements, which is also called the Mendeleev table. If anyone ever learned it by heart, it will now have to sit down to study again. The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry officially recommended to add the name of the elements with atomic numbers 113, 115, 117 and 118.
Four new elements are: nihonium (NH) – which was awarded to Japan (Nihon is one of the names of the country), moscovium (Mc) – in honor of Moscow, tennessine (Ts) – from the US state of Tennessee and oganesson (OG) – named after the Russian physicist Yuri Oganessiana. The new elements were discovered by scientists from Japan, the United States and Russia, hence it was decided on a name. The Japanese can be very proud, because nihonium is the first element from Asia.
Work on naming lasted from December 2015, when he officially recognized the existence of new elements. Thanks to their discovery scientists were also able to completely close the seventh row of the periodic table, which for many years had empty seats.
All newly added elements were obtained by artificial means, in strictly controlled laboratory conditions and they do not occur naturally in nature. They were delayed adding them to the periodic table, because there were a lot of difficulties in proving their existence. These elements disintegrate very quickly – for example. Nihonium managed to produce only one thousandth of a second. For this experiment the scientists have been difficult to replicate, which further extended the official recognition of the entire procedure and give appropriate names. For example, to obtain nihonium researchers bombarding a thin layer of bismuth for high speed rozpędzonymi zinc ions.
The names of new elements may relate to the mythology, places of their discovery, discoverer, naw minerals from which they are derived or to their properties.
