supply ship docked today Cygnus to the International Space Station, delivering food, spare parts and new ekperymentów. This is the first mission Purchasing Cygnus – a ship constructed by a private American company Orbital Sciences Corporation.
Cygnus was launched by a rocket Antares, also owned by Orbital Sciences. Start occurred on Thursday, January 9 2014 at 19:07 Polish time. Planned to launch a rocket the day before, but because of the sudden increase in solar activity (Class X flare) it was decided to postpone the flight.
On Sunday, January 12 at 12:08 astronauts 38 Expedition – Mike Hopkins Koichi Wakata and – Cygnus caught using a robotic arm Canadarm2. Two hours later, the ship was already connected to the Harmony module of the International Space Station. Remain in this place until 18 February, when it is Unberthing to a day later burn up in the atmosphere. 105kB JPEG 1000×752 (93/93.00) | ship Cygnus attached to the robotic arm Canadarm2, by which docked to the International Space Station. Mission officially called Orbital-1 is the first of eight contracted supply mission Orbital Sciences. Although the ship Cygnus already visited the ISS (in September 2013 years), but it was only a demo mission.
Ship provided 1260 kg supplies: food and personal items astronauts, spare parts and equipment needed for the new experiments, including 23 designed by students from the U.S. and Canada. ISS also hit nanosatellites, which will be released on their own orbit with the lock in the Japanese Kibo module.
In the orbital laboratory will be conducted, among others, studies of the behavior of ants and the effectiveness of antibiotics in space. Present at the station three SPHERES satellites (called S ynchronized P osition H old, E ngage, R eorient E Xperimental S atellites) will be used to study the properties of fluids in microgravity. Scientists hope it will help to reduce expenditure on liquid fuel used in rocket rides. Added: Ania Kapu?ci?ska – 2014-01-12 11:40:11 p.m. 01Source: NASA – American Space Agency
