NASA revealed the first images, taken by the New Horizons spacecraft during its flyby of Pluto and Charon.
– We already have great results – first data says Alan Stern, the chief scientist of the mission. And that’s just the beginning.
The published picture shows around the planet’s equator. There are glaciated mountains with a height of up to 3,500 meters. Most likely it’s quite young creations, formed approx. 100 million years ago. – One of the youngest in the solar system – says Jeff Moore, one of the geologists working at the New Horizons mission.
Pluto is not warmed by gravitational interactions with other objects of the solar system. For changes on the planet’s surface must therefore correspond to other processes related to the internal dynamics of the celestial body.
We also know the new photos Charon. What surprised the researchers, the moon does not have craters. There are, however, traces of the processes that must occur within natural satellite of Pluto.
The probe also took a magnifying glass minor family members Pluto – moons, Nix, Hydra and Cerberus Styx. We already know that Hydra has an irregular shape and dimensions of 43 to 33 km. Probably covered with a water-ice.
