Scientists from the Canadian Simon Fraser University conducted a study involving nine volunteers. These people wore on their feet a kind of exoskeleton, which made walking in a normal pace required much effort.
Within a few minutes each volunteer so modified his usual gait pattern to consume as little energy as possible. As the scientists explain, the nervous system constantly subconsciously adjusts the movements in order to reduce energy consumption – ie the job done at the expense of the smallest possible effort.
Even when a man is running to lose weight, the brain is trying to optimize the effort in such a way the weight loss becomes less effective. Further research is to explain how thousands of units of muscle nerve cooperate in order to reduce effort.
