Europeans: learning has a positive impact on society - rmf24.pl

More than three quarters of Europeans believe that science and technology have a positive impact on society – according to the Eurobarometer survey of public opinion. Only two out of five respondents feel informed about what is happening in science.

interest in the development of science and technology expressed more than half of all respondents, but only 40 per cent. of respondents said they feel adequately informed about what is happening in this sector (in Poland only 37 percent. respondents).

80 percent. agreed with the statement that the European Union should promote European standards of ethical conduct of research, and 86 per cent. believes that research should equally address the needs of men and women. On the other hand, more than half of the respondents are of the opinion that when it comes to decisions about science and technology, you need a public dialogue.


Slightly less than half of the respondents stated that they study science or technology at school, university, college or other institution (in Poland it is 35 percent. Respondents).

The majority of respondents believe that their governments do not doing enough to stimulate young people’s interest in these areas of science. The survey shows that most Europeans derive information on the development of science on television and in the newspapers followed, websites and magazines.

Eurobarometer commented European Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, Maire Geoghegan- Quinn. results of this study show that Europeans have a positive view of the role that science and technology play to the public, but at the same time expect their values ??and concerns will be taken into account by researchers and policy makers – said the Commissioner.
