“Organoidy” printed a research team of the Institute for Regenerative Medicine, Wake Forest School of Medicine in the US. To do this, the researchers “reprogrammed” the skin cells, turning them into heart cells. After this treatment they were given shape using 3D printers and cell cultures. This has provided a miniature heart with a diameter of 0.25 mm – a little wider than a single human hair. Similar size were also printed the liver.
Team was created at the request of the US government in late 2013. Washington research allocated $ 24 million. Standing at the head of Anthony Atala scientists predicted then that the work will be of great importance for the future of medicine.
– Miniature laboratory designed organopodobne heart, liver, lungs and blood vessels – linked together circulating blood substitute – will be used to predict the time effects on the human body chemical and biological agents, and to test the effectiveness of potential therapies – Assess Atala.
also noted that the use of 3D printers has lead to cessation of medical tests on animals and raising them to the authorities for testing.
