Antibiotics – a new fund? – Raphael Motriuk / IAR
Doctors have long alarm: the lack of new antibiotics, and more and more bacteria – from tuberculosis to typhoid fever – stops responding to traditional antibiotics.
That’s why a team of experts appointed by the British government calls for the pharmaceutical industry pay into a special fund two billion US dollars. The money would get scientists and small biotech companies.
Then those who would produce new antibiotics, would receive guaranteed payout. According to British experts, could thus create 15 new antibiotics within a decade. Today, large pharmaceutical companies are doing this reluctantly, because the financial risk is enormous. According to the head of the British team, economist Jim O’Neil, drug-resistant bacteria can kill in the middle of the century ten million people every year.
