Journalist Interia as one of the first in the world media representatives had a chance to check augmented reality glasses HoloLens Microsoft. For years it was the largest makers of Windows technology secret. HoloLens could revolutionize the way we use computers. But let’s start from the beginning.
HoloLens does not move us to a virtual world like Oculus Rift VR goggles or other. There are HUD-I display information or notifications from our smartphone (like Google Glass). Modifies for our environment, applying the surrounding projections of three-dimensional objects. That’s not all, because the user can enter interact with them using gestures and voice commands. It is thus a virtual reality (assuming special glasses) and augmented reality (3D models and their projection takes place in our room). This technology is somewhat reminiscent of ideas known from science fiction movies, mainly associating with the Holodeck from Star Trek. What does it mean?
Another World
During the official presentation appeared on the scene drone, which for us – the audience – was only an interesting toy . It’s one thing for a person equipped with a HoloLens. This had already seen the lovable robot – with a head, torso and hands. On either side were virtual controllers that control and stepping into greater interaction with the machine.
All this and much more allows fairly complex device consisting of Windows 10, advanced sensors environment mapping and analyzing our gestures and voice commands, display and coprocessor collecting and analyzing data from sensors – Holographic Processing Unit ( HPU).
We see only nicely designed goggles, a little reminiscent of those worn by pilots of military aircraft. They have a fairly large rim sustained them on the head and the glass acting as the HUD. They present a very modern and are simply nice.
With HoloLens on the head
Media presentation consisted of two stages. HoloLens first demonstrated the possibility of using Skype and was conducted by employees of Microsoft. One of them sat in front of a computer in a separate room, where he handled this program. The second one was wearing goggles. Thanks to them, he was able to operate virtual application window and place them anywhere in the room – eg. To put on your desk. Everything was done using gestures and voice commands. The word stake here is particularly important because HoloLens recognize faces and know that desk is an obstacle, to which the user can place virtual object. This is possible because the goggles map the room.
But that’s not all. The operator Skype – at the same time seeing the application window is what you HoloLens – may share his virtual items or objects from the games. The latter can change the size, set in different locations or move to a 3D printer and print.
In the second stage, I had the opportunity to check HoloLens on your own head. The very process of setting up the machine is not problematic. Place them in such a way that you can see in front of you all the edges of the virtual rectangle. Then tighten the mount on the back of the head and, after all. HoloLens are ready for action. Interestingly, the device is quite light and comfortable.
Armed with goggles I had the opportunity to play in the architect. With their help, I moved projection mock-up building with the computer (three-dimensional form, of course) and placed among other models, but real. There could change eg. The size of its individual components – using the mouse, which has ceased to operate a graphics program, and in the form of a virtual moved to my site.
Also, the second part of the show was to prove that HoloLens can become invaluable support for architects and designers of buildings. With his help, I could look through the wall and determine that it is behind it (virtual of course) forces to forge a pillar of the door opening in a different place than was originally assumed. That’s not all, because the next problem appeared to be running in the wall of the pipe. Fortunately, Microsoft’s vision implies that the person who has my place points at the obstacle and leave him a voice memo with the designer, who will remove it. Anyway, that’s how I acted.
A new era of computers
During this short show, I could not help feeling that I am associated with very advanced technology. The ability to interact with virtual objects is huge, and projections delight quality. Any object goes exactly as we look, but once placed anywhere, is there still. We can freely go around, spy on each side, change its size or print in 3D.
However, more delights accompanied by doubts and questions, because at the moment I can not see HoloLens for many applications. Everything remains in the hands of developers. We do not know the exact release date HoloLens, prices, or all of the potential applications of this technology. One thing is certain – HoloLens could usher in a whole new era in the history of computers.
