During the nine years the probe defeated the 4.8 billion kilometers. Start rocket, which amounted New Horizons in space, took place in 2006. At that time Pluto was still a full-fledged planet, but in flight the scientists changed her status to “dwarf planet.”
Time at which the probe re-established contact with flight center after leaving the shadow of the planet, and creator of the success of the mission burst into joy, was truly remarkable. The probe then flew at a speed of 50,000 km / h – if even then collided with speck the size of a grain of rice, aircraft equipment could be destroyed, and the mission would end in failure. New Horizons was able, however, during the nine-year journey to Pluto arrive safely. This small dwarf planet is about five times smaller than the Earth – its diameter is approx. 2370 km.
The aim of the mission was to gather as much information about Pluto. Because the dwarf planet is quite a distance from the Earth, our messages were quite scarce. The last five days brought more information than ever before were able to get. Pluto has five moons. With the mission learned on Pluto are polar caps and a thin atmosphere composed mostly of nitrogen.
Some areas of the dwarf planet, for example. area south pole, are illuminated by the sun once every 100 years. Pluto over the years remained a mysterious planet, distant bright dot. Today we can admire the amazing images of the dwarf planet.
