Luxury scientific conference grafenowi continues in Warsaw from Monday to Friday.
Graphene Week involved researchers working on the production and the use of graphene, including – Nobel Prize winner Konstantin Novoselov.
During Monday’s opening conference, Deputy Minister of development Jadwiga Emilewicz asked: – Maybe you’re wondering State, which at the conference do the politicians. We’re not just here to take pictures of young promising scientists. We are here to follow the discussions to listen to what you say, to search for new trends – in science and the economy.
It indicated that the creator of one of the production methods of graphene quality, Vladimir Strupiński from the Institute of Electronic Materials Technology (ITME), it was one of the first people with whom the Deputy Minister met this year after taking office. – He convinced me how important it is graphene. He showed me the possibilities of application of this material – said the deputy minister.
Graphene is not only a material important for scientists
The Rector of the University of Warsaw – the university, which guests this year the conference – pointed out that graphene is not only an important material for researchers. Are associated with it are also serious social expectations.
Graphene is a material comprising a single layer of carbon atoms. It is widely used – can be used, among others, for the production of flexible smartphone battery with improved performance and the development of anticancer therapies.
Conference Graphene Week is organized by the European Commission as part of Graphene Flagship – the 10-year European Union project. Its aim is to develop research on the use of graphene and other two-dimensional materials in different areas of life and the economy. The project involves 150 partners from 23 countries. Graphene Flagship – next to the Human Brain Project – is one of two flagship projects KE. For the realization of these two projects, the European Commission has allocated nearly a billion euro. The project began in 2013. And will last for 10 years.
The European Commission representative Andrew Houghton said that in the second part of the project more attention shall be given to the use of graphene and more and more will be the role of the industry. As said, the success of the project grafenowego are necessary both national funding agencies and industry partners.
Recognition for scientists from Warsaw
The choice of Polish place conference is European researchers in recognition of his contributions to research on graphene scientists from Warsaw. – Previous editions of the conference were held in the centers, which play a significant role in the development of graphene. The first organized Chalmers University of Technology. The second was held in Manchester, where they work discoverers of graphene and Nobel Prize winners, professors Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov. About a third organization asked our institute in recognition of the contributions of our scientists, particularly Dr. Vladimir Strupińskiego, which is one of the forerunners of studies on graphene – says the director of ITME in Warsaw dr. Ireneusz Marciniak.
 – It’s like the Olympics. It does not organize her at random. In Europe, we really appreciated when it comes to research on graphene. Let us not miss this – he said in an interview with PAP Dr. Strupiński
