One of the curiosities at Computex 2013 Intel was little gadget – the fastest flash drive in the world. With a capacity of 128 GB of data it can be completed in as little as 90 seconds.
end of the twentieth century brought a revolutionary change in the way computers connect to different devices. It is difficult to overstate the convenience of USB and offered us its successive versions getting faster, and the success of this approach is the fact that it became the global standard that is used in billions of different devices.
USB, despite its name, is not fully universal, so despite the prevalence of this standard still use other connectors, such as FireWire or HDMI. Even in 2009, Apple and Intel decided to stop. The solution turned out to be one universal interface called Light Peak, commonly known as Thunderbolt, which in the future will replace the USB (if replaced, because probably will not be easy to win with the most popular interface).
Thunderbolt, but used in a growing number of devices, not yet achieved mass popularity, and was previously used primarily for video transmission and efficient connection of hard drives. The list of possible uses Thunderbolt recently completed with another equipment.
Intel launched called USB flash drive thumb drive and 128 GB to which memory modules supplied by SanDisk. The thing that sets it apart from numerous USB sticks, is the kind of interface – connect a thumb drive because no USB port, but the Thunderbolt connector.
This solution aims to provide very high data transfer rate. Intel boasts that thumb drive supports transfer of 10 Gb / s, which is twice larger than that of USB 3.0, which confirmed such Oren Huber from Intel:
“This is one of the first thumb drives that use Thunderbolt. This connection is the fastest available technology, allowing you to transfer data between computers and peripherals. (…) USB 3.0 is about twice as slow as the Thunderbolt.”
Unfortunately, we do not know anything about the date of the introduction of this gadget on the market – Thumb Drive is so far only a prototype. Unknown is the price, but judging by the interface used is likely to be significantly higher than for thumb drives using USB 3.0.
