These new building blocks of matter consisting of five quarks. Already ten years ago there were reports about their discovery, but then you have not been confirmed. Since the 60s of the last century, we know that the elementary building blocks of matter are quarks. No one has ever seen the free quark, which would not be associated with other quarks. These particles are always glued together by means of strong nuclear (forces strongest in nature), to form subatomic particles such as protons and neutrons, which are a component of the nuclei.

Until now, it seemed that quark occur only in pairs and in threes. With triplets of quarks created the so-called baryons, which include protons and neutrons, but also hundreds of other very short-lived subatomic particles that have already been discovered. In contrast, the pairs of quarks – a quark and an antiquark exactly – are molded particles called mesons.

Not known but not a single particle, which would include more than the three unpaired quarks and antiquarks. Till today. The team analyzed the data from the LHCb experiment at the Large Hadron Collider particle accidentally came across made up of five quarks.

Theoretically speaking, the existence of such particles is not prohibited in the current theory of matter. Over 10 years ago, the Japanese physicists even announced that they had discovered the particle in collisions of protons and neutrons, but in other laboratories have not been able to confirm the discovery. The researchers concluded that they were dealing with a statistical fluctuation in the results, and they withdrew from the discovery.

This time, no more no mistake. Physicists at CERN, mindful of the unfortunate experience from years ago, they made sure that data analysis is correct. Pentakwarki emerged as one of the intermediate particle decay products “Lambda B”.

They consist of two quarks “top”, “bottom”, “powabnego” and “antypowabnego”. Due to the presence of this last couple of pentakwark called “powabnium.”

– Pentakwark not just a new particle observed – says LHCb team leader Guy Wilkinson. – It’s a whole new kind of connection of quarks, never before unobserved, despite more than 50 years of research. Understanding their properties can help us in understanding how ordinary matter is built, from which we make everyone.

The next step will be to examine how the quarks to combine to create pentakwark. – They can be closely related or loosely. In the latter case resemble a molecule composed of baryon and meson – LHCb physicist says Liming Zhang of Tsinghua University.
