Martian rovers designed by Polish students took first and second place in the international competition of robots University Rover Challenge (URC) 2013.
University Rover Challenge is a robot competition organized by The Mars Society. Already since 2007, is to encourage young people to create your own academic rovers and development of technologies for the exploration of the planets of the solar system. It turns out that the Poles have in this topic some extremely valuable achievements. The latest among the students of the Technical University of Bialystok and University of Technology.
URC has won this year’s edition of Hyperion rover – built and developed by a team of Bialystok. Remote-controlled device has six made regardless of drive wheels which enable it to overcome obstacles and navigate the desert floor – sandy and rocky. For communication with the robot corresponds to the GPS system.
The structure of the machine turned out to be unbeaten in all competitions – search for life in samples of hidden between the rocks, off-road driving through the designated points or assistance astronaut. Some of them were completed in record time, making it very positively surprised the judges. Finally, the rover was 493 to 500 possible points – the highest score in the history of the event.
– Task Field did in 12 minutes – the judges were shocked Everything efficiently and accurately, we are very pleased. Dzi? we still have a presentation, and tomorrow we help lost to “Mars” astronauts – that reported the event team from Bialystok.
much worse did a jeep Scorpio III built by students from Wroclaw. Scored 401 points gave him second place and crew pi??dziesi?ciojednopunktow? advantage over the United States.
– The panel did six to nine tasks. We feel hungry, because if it was not “bad luck”, we could do more. She pushed us to the upper part of the posterior segment of the housing (it was attached with Velcro and tape, but the wind was blowing really hard), which for a time obscured the vision of the main Webcams – sums up the group of Wroclaw.
Scorpio III is based on a lightweight aluminum frame and each of the six separate motor drives the wheels. The robot can handle driving in difficult terrain and vibrations that can interfere with equipment are damped by lightweight wheels covered in soft but durable material.
The judges were impressed by the maturity of both robots and the progress made during the past year. Hyperion was winning for the construction of an improved version called MAGMA 2, which took first place in 2011.
took part in the competition another Polish rover – Legendary Rover developed by students from the University of Rzeszów. The team, however, faced with logistical and technical problems, hence the slightly lower score.
more and more prestigious competitions stolen by Polish youth. This shows that the topic of space technology development, we feel great and we have a chance for existence in the field of science. We are able to create not only equipment, but also software for satellite systems.
– It is a good business – new technology, advanced systems that need to be able to build and use. Then there are apps that allow you to achieve very good profits. They take up more space sector. I can not imagine any human activity no satellite applications – says Dr. Orléans of the Space Research Centre.
