Scientists from IBM, Globalfoundries, Samsung, STMicroelectronics and SUNY Polytechnic Institute’s Colleges of Nanoscale Science and Engineering have created a fully functional, siedmionanometrowy chip.
The present invention permits the placement of more than 20 billion transistors on a fingernail-size chip which can be used in any device – from smartphones spacecraft. In order to achieve the benefits, and therefore lower power consumption, better performance and scalability, creating siedmionanometrowy chip, the researchers had to work around the conventional approach used for years in the production of semiconductors. The most interesting of them are the use of krzemogermanie-based transistors (SiGe) and ultraviolet lithography (EUV).
Industry experts consider 7nm as a key technology for the development of systems of cloud and Big Data, as well as mobile devices and cognitive computing. Today, in these devices use technology to 22 nm and 14 nm. The research group led by scientists at IBM proved that it is possible to improve the performance and scalability of solutions by almost 50% compared to use today’s most advanced technology. This means new opportunities for developers of solutions mainframe and POWER systems – at lower cost and size processors are gaining a much better performance.
Thus exceeded the next technological barrier. This will enable the soon construction of efficient, highly integrated and optymalniejszych new generation of energy systems.
