August 2014. In numbers
Features August spam
- In August, we recorded a significant 62-percent increase in the number of phishing attacks. This was probably due to a seasonal drop in demand for advertising spam. To be able to still make money, cybercriminals switched to other kinds of spam, including phishing scams. Forging messages from known sites, social networking or financial organizations, phishers have significantly increased the chances that their attacks will be effective. Users who do not want to become a victim of this type of fraud, they should apply the following simple rules: check the address of the sender and caution against messages containing attachments. In this case, better to contact directly with the company than to trust the sender’s email and lose personal data – said Tatiana Shcherbakov, spam analyst at Kaspersky Lab.
The malicious spam
In August, employees of Kaspersky Lab detected malicious files distributed via e-mail pretending to be subpoenas. Messages inform recipients that they are summoned to the court before the hearing must be familiar with the information contained in the Annex. The attached file was hidden Trojan Kuluoz however, the aim of which is to download and run the infected system other malicious programs.
Cyber criminals who spread the malicious attachments in spam emails, once again used as bait fake notifications from Facebook. The messages could be read that the portal was the victim of burglary, and therefore its creators ask users to install the included tool to prevent similar problems in the future. But instead of the promised tool attached to the ZIP archive contained a Trojan Haze, which is used by cybercriminals to download other malicious software, including code designed to steal personal data of the owner of the computer and sending infected messages to all addresses from your contacts list.
The first three places in the August rankings malware spawned in spam occupied Trojans, of which the front two – Redirector and Fraud – This HTML page. Redirector redirects the user to a malicious site, where the victim is encouraged to download Binbota – services for automated trading binary options popular. On the other hand Fraud impersonating the registration form on the website, online banking and cybercriminals sends stolen financial information. Third place is occupied by a family of Trojans that install in infected Upatre banking systems malicious program, which aims to attack customers of financial institutions.
