Microsoft reaches out to the pirates? – Computerworld

The company from Redmond wants to facilitate people using illegal copies of Windows to legalize their system. “We would like as many people using pirated versions of Windows became members of the community legitimate users” – said Terry Myerson, general manager of Windows, but added immediately that there would be no question of any amnesty.

Myerson confirmed that Microsoft is working on a solution that will legalize a pirated copy of Windows, “one-click”. Those who expect that it will rely on a single, massive illegal copies recognition as legitimate, they shall deal but the taste – it is rather about simplifying the process of buying and activating the license. From the first announcement that it refers, it will be Windows 10.

A representative of Microsoft revealed that the corporation intends to encourage users to migrate to legitimate OS-in, and convinced provide links to sites where they can quickly and conveniently purchase a license for Windows 10. This experimental solution is soon to be launched in the US and if there proves to be effective, it may be extended to other markets, in which the company operates.

One of the main advantages of this solution should be easy to obtain a legal copy of Windows 10 – you will not need again to install the system (as it was when we wanted to legalize any of the earlier versions of the OS-u) . Instead, you will be able to easily “add” license to the already Windows 10, making it thus fully legal copy.

Free Windows 10? No, but not

It is clear that this time, Microsoft really wants to avoid any misunderstandings and distortions in this case – to not repeat mistakes who committed in March of this year. Then this is the same Terry Myerson rather cavalierly declared that every user of Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 can free install of Windows 10, which by journalists, analysts and users have been treated as a harbinger of great amnesty for pirates and mass “legalization” of all pirated copies of Windows.

This decision seemed then what is true rather surprising, but also quite probable – Microsoft itself admitted that intensely reflects on what model of earning a Windows intends to adopt (considered apparently a variant in which the system would be offered free of charge, and users would pay for the additional applications and services).

After a surprising statement, Myerson Microsoft for nearly two months has not been able to clearly define its position on the matter, it was only in mid-May, the company simply wrote that offer royalty-free upgrade to Windows 10 only applies to legal copies of Windows 7/8 / 8.1. This message also was indeed not entirely accurate – eventually it turned out that the pirated Windows 7 & amp; 8 Although you can upgrade for free to version 10 … and such copies of the system will still be illegal.

Shortly later emerged also speculation, Microsoft allegedly considering offering “pirates” significant discounts on licenses for Windows (costing $ 120 for the standard version of Home and approx. 200 USD for Pro edition).

Simplified path

The latest news from the camp of Microsoft, however, show that at a discount not count – pirates get for a simplified migration path to legal Windows 10. All indications are that it will apply only to this version, because it is in the “top ten” appeared recently mechanism that simplifies the process of binding copy of Windows with a specific serial number (the license). It will allow you to activate Windows 10 directly with a legal serial Windows 7, or 8. So far it worked a little differently – activation mechanism of checking the legality of the given key with Win 7 or 8 on the servers of Microsoft, and on the basis of this review to decide on whether can activate Windows 10. The same method will now be used to activate pirated copies of Windows by using the serial number of legally purchased, eg. in the shop.

It is worth noting that Microsoft in recent years quite radically changed its approach to Users of pirated copies of Windows. Although the company successfully introduced a more sophisticated method of activating the software and identify the illegal copies … but at the same time relieving action against users of such systems.

Pirates is getting easier

A few years ago the use of such software associated with many difficulties – the system will automatically reset the from time to time and regularly display a clear notice about the lack of an appropriate license. With time, however, these restrictions were liquidated and now, in most cases there is only a small annotation that the system is not genuine. What’s more, a few years ago, Microsoft withdrew also from an earlier decision, under which non-genuine copy of Windows does not have access to any updates – now, such systems receive all updates related to security (patches and patches that remove vulnerabilities and potentially dangerous misconfigurations ).
