Thanks to many years of collaboration between researchers from France, Polish and Italian managed to transform the nucleus taken from sheep cells – fibroblast – the sperm in just 48 hours – said prof. Grazyna Bird of Krakow.
As the research showed, just spur to action, only one gene (hPrm1), coding for the production of protamine to the nucleus taken from a sheep cell of the body – fibroblast – in Within 48 hours achieved a structure typical of the sperm head. Normal sperm flagellum sheep yet and is half the size (body cell has the genetic material father and mother and the sperm of their son – only half).

Protamine is a protein, whereby the genetic material of sperm is very tightly packed. Converting the cell nucleus to the sperm can be facilitated research on cloning and reduce their cost.
Publication of the results in the prestigious journal “Cell Reports” is the culmination of 10 years of work on the re-modulation and re-programming of somatic cell nuclei. The authors of the study are researchers from Italy, France and Polish. The main authors, Dr. Domenico Iuso and Dr. Marta Czernik, are strongly tied to Krakow academia: Dr. Iuso part of his research conducted at the Institute of Animal Production in Krakow and Dr. Czernik one of his doctorates graduated from the Jagiellonian University. These young scientists worked, and before preparing theses and doctoral dissertations under the direction of another author’s publications, prof. Assoc. Grazyna Bird.
Professor Bird, embryologist, representing the Institute of Animal Production – National Research Institute, started work on reprogramming the nucleus in Italy back in 2008.
As noted, published just work will have a huge impact on the development of basic research in the field of cellular biology . It will also be important for the development of technology transgenic animals used in medicine, for example, transplantation, and cloning endangered species or breeding animals of particularly genetic merit.
