Image, which NASA has used, was taken by the rover Curiosity on September 9 this year. In the foreground, a distance of about 3 km from the rover is visible as long ridge, which owes its colors high content of hematite in the rocks. Just beyond the ridge extends clay valley, mountains in the background composed of minerals with high sulphation.

The diverse structure and composition on the surface of planet formation indicate a changing climate. Some of these formations could be caused by the erosive action of water billions of years ago. The research team responsible for the work of the jeep hopes to explore these areas in the coming months and even years.

The colors in the picture are modified in such a way as to capture the colors of the rocks viewed in the Earth's atmosphere. This procedure was performed to compensate for the lack of blue in the light observed on the surface of the planet. This is what has allowed geologists to approximately determine the composition of rocks on the surface of the Red Planet.

There was water

On the basis of data collected by Curiosity and made his images, the researchers found, on the surface of Mars are areas in which billions of years ago could collect water and remain there for a long time. Probably the wet period in the history of the planet appeared 3.8 billion years ago and lasted until 3.3 billion years ago. Traces of this can be seen in the lower layers of Mount Sharp formation. - Data provided by Curiosity indicate that at some time in a long time, there were both rivers and lakes, which provide sediment to build formations which are today lower parts of Mount Sharp - said Ashwin Vasavada from NASA.

The observed results are consistent with previous scientific speculation about the existence of water on Mars in the distant past. Today, most of the water stored in glaciers, most of which are hidden under a layer of dust covering the planet's surface.

To this day, it is not entirely clear in what circumstances Mars, who once much more like Earth, has lost almost all water in the liquid state. One hypothesis that the nucleus of the planet cool down much faster than the Earth, and this resulted in the disappearance of the magnetic field. On the other hand, his lack caused the atmosphere was literally blown away from the planet's surface, which, combined with the change of the axis of rotation resulted in eternal winter on the surface. The water that was in the atmosphere, thus escaped into space, and that which was on the planet's surface was frozen and sometimes her bed were covered with dust present on the planet.

Greetings to the rover
