European Green Capital award is awarded annually by the European Commission to a city that stands out from the others in terms of best practice, improve the quality of life of residents, while fostering the environment .
– context is much broader, because it actually is distributed in twelve areas which have to describe, present both from the perspective of how they look today and how we want to change them – says Leszek Drogosz, director of the Office of Infrastructure in Warsaw.
Appreciated concrete steps, for example. sustainable use of green areas, biodiversity in the city, waste management, sewage and water or innovative solutions for air pollution abatement.

– This is a very large area, which is covered with forests, parks , allotments, so it all together gives you a good starting position. Now you have to develop, enhance, organize, and only then we can show good practices in each of these areas – explains Drogosz.
Do we have a chance?
Director of the Office of Infrastructure says that “in the competition better feel of a smaller town.”
– This intimacy also is probably some element that functions well. Large break in this competition is probably more difficult – he said.
Paul Szypulski with the Union of Associations Polish Green Network says that even if Warsaw did not win, it would be a success.
– This is a sign that Warsaw has ambitions to join the “greener cities in Europe,” – commented.
To now, the title of “European Green Capital” awarded Bristol, Copenhagen, Nantes, Vitoria, Hamburg and Stockholm.
