On Monday morning the Swedish Academy presented the first of this year's Nobel Prize winners. In the first place distinguished researchers in physiology and medicine. Nobel in these areas is one of five prizes established in the will of Alfred Nobel. By 2014 he was awarded 207 such awards, which hit a total of 105 people. Last year was awarded scientists who discovered and studied our internal GPS in the brain.

Nobel Prize for fighting parasites

This year's Nobel laureates announced in the Karolinska Institute - a medical university in Stockholm. It Nobel Assembly of the Institute decides who should be the prize in medicine. The Assembly includes 50 professors who this year had no doubts. - Nobel Prize in 2015 received the William C. Campbell and Satoshi Omura and Tu Youyou for new therapies to fight parasitic infections - announced on Monday the Nobel Committee.

William C. Campbell (born in Ireland, now lives in the US) and Satoshi Omura (Japan) received the award for his discovery of avermectin. Drug is a cure for elephantiasis, a disease caused by parasitic nematodes. He saved hundreds of millions of people.

The other half of the prize, which is 8 million Swedish crowns (approx. 850 thousand. Euros), will receive Youyou here from China. 12 is the woman who received the Nobel Prize in medicine and physiology. She was honored for the discovery of artemether - a cure for malaria caused by parasitic protozoa of the genus Plasmodium transmitted by malarial mosquitoes. Artemether is extracted from sweet wormwood, a relative of wormwood herb. Also this drug has saved millions of lives.

Alfred Nobel would today be happy

Discovered by Nobel Prize winners drugs malaria and słoniowaciźnie completely changed the way we treat these diseases. There were a revolution in medicine, he had been waiting world. With the discoveries were saved or improved the quality of life of 3.4 billion people in the countries where these diseases are endemic. The drug developed by a Chinese woman in 30 years of use by half reduced mortality from malaria.

- Research awarded scientists actually affected human health and serve humanity. Alfred Nobel would have been happy today - justified the selection of the winners of the Nobel Committee.

William C. Campbell is now parasitology retired. Tu Youyou also retired and is engaged in m.in traditional Chinese medicine. Japanese Satoshi Omura is still professionally active microbiologist. Specializes in the study of soil and exploration of unique compounds bactericidal and pasożytniczobójczych.
