The mission involved two Russians Mikhail Kornienko and Gennady Padalka and American Scott Kelly. Padalka come back in six months, but Kelly and Kornienko are in space until twelve months. Their stay is to give scientists an answer to what extent the cosmic radiation, weightlessness and isolation affect health. Body astronauts will be tested in seven different ways. This may include physical form human-friendly microbes or metabolism.

The mission also involved a retired astronaut Mark Kelly’s twin brother Scott. He, however, will remain on the ground and will provide material for comparison. – We examine two people who have the same genes, but will spend a year in different conditions. This is a unique opportunity for science – said Craig Kundrot from NASA. Researchers will examine what changes occur in the blood brothers. Will they be subjected to psychological tests.

Scientists now know that a longer stay in weightlessness can negatively affect the immune system, muscles and bones. Deprived of gravity spine begins to expand and astronauts in space to grow a few inches. This can cause problems not only with the movement, but also the leadership of nervous. Flowing to the upper part of the body fluids can in turn lead to feelings of breathlessness. The changes also affect the eyes.

– Do you remember as a child huśtaliście to head down the ladder? Around the eyes felt the pressure. Astronauts may feel the same, because weightlessness can change the flow of fluids in the body, which in turn can affect the eyes – explains Dr. John Charles of NASA.

The negative effects on the eyes is also cosmic radiation. Many former astronauts suffer from cataracts.

The mission is part of the work of astronauts on manned flight to Mars. The round trip takes about three years. – Perhaps it is the limit of human capabilities in such a mission which can not be exceeded, but we know that without examining – Scott Kelly said.

Start capsule from the Baikonur Cosmodrome Soyuz is scheduled for 21:42 Polish time.
