NASA will examine the Earth’s magnetic field – Focus

Magnetic reconnection is a process that occurs in the vicinity of the stars and planets, including our sun. Cosmic phenomenon affects the weather, which in turn affects the operation of satellites and electrical networks on our planecie.Łączenie or disconnect magnetic fields is a process that is considered to be the most powerful catalyst for the explosion in our solar system. Until now, the feasibility of this phenomenon, however, were negligible.

– Now, after ten years of planning and complex calculations are finally ready to work. Yet I had never had the power to scrutinize this basic process in such a detailed way, “- said Jim Burch MMS scientific team at the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio.

Thanks to the MMS mission scientists receive the first three-dimensional images reconnection that occurs in the magnetosphere of the planet. Magnetic reconnection occurs when there is a rapid changes the magnetic field lines in a moving conductive fluid. This phenomenon is the cause of coronal ejections on the Sun, solar flares and caused by solar storms.

A new NASA mission involves the use of probes in the shape of octagons, who will be conducting observations in the magnetosphere and circled around the Earth. Scientists expect the MMS mission will help them to better understand the process of magnetic reconnection but also provide new information about the massive explosions on the sun that can disrupt the modern technological systems such as communication networks, GPS and power grids.
