Periodic Table has gained four new elements – Newsweek Poland

It’s official – the four new elements discovered in recent years are real. Under the international agreement, scientists officially added it to the periodic table.

The decision on the addition of four empty seats in the seventh row of the periodic elements has taken the International Union of Chemistry Pure and Applied (IUPAC). Substances correspond to the atomic numbers 113, 115, 117 and 118 – informs the British “The Guardian”.

What are the characteristics considered elements? First of all, the fact that – like all other atomic number greater than 94 – not occur naturally. Are synthetic substances produced under laboratory conditions. Proving its existence is very difficult, because disintegrate within a few seconds of receipt. That is why the scientists who discovered them a few years ago, at any price they wanted to prove their existence a second time – this time in the presence of members of the IUPAC.

– For seven years conducted research on element 113, to finally prove its existence. There are not conducive to our happiness – said during a press conference Kosuke Morita from Japan’s RIKEN research institute, responsible for the discovery of “stotrzynastki”. – Do not poddawaliśmy to the very end. We believed that in the end will succeed – he assured.

December 31 RIKEN announced that the discovery team Morita was officially recognized. At the same time the Japanese were granted the right to give root official name. In supplemented the periodic table ever since figures temporary “Ununtrium” and the symbol “UUT.”

Next in the order of elements with atomic numbers 115, 117 and 118 – previously known under the working name “ununpentium” (Uup) ” Ununseptium “(SMS), and” Ununoctium “(Uuo) – laboratory-acquired team of American and Russian researchers. Their discovery also recognized in the IUPAC.
