This is probably no one expected. It is true that the Irish have long been predicting their new album, but no one thought that it appears so without notice. Not only that – when at yesterday’s conference Apple in California Bono announced release of “Songs Of Innocence”, it turned out that the users iTunes and Beats Music recordings are available for free! Such a motion is not made even Beyonce – maybe a Christian spirit inspired U2 for this move?
The first impression after hearing the album are surprisingly positive. It starts with a kick – distorted guitars and rousing chorus make it “The Miracle (Joey Ramone of)” will be sung crowds in stadiums during the next Route Irish. Unfortunately – and then a weaker point. “Every Breaking Wave” is associated with one hand, “With Or Without You” U2, and on the other – with “Every Breath You Take” The Police. Why nobody noticed?
Fortunately, “California (There Is No End To Love)” again puts to the vertical. For the first time, but not for the last time, there are strong echoes here of post-punk past, Bono and his colleagues. Growling bass, keys lengthy, sublime vocals – all reminiscent of early pop band. “Song For Someone” is the first ballad in the set. Beginning a little weak, it seems, therefore, that you will have to be written off – but over time the song develops, exploding riot vibrating guitars. And it is good!
“Iris (Hold Me Close)” is a classic U2 in the second half of the 80 . – beautiful and epic song dedicated to my mom vocalist, showing that Bono was right when he said to Peter Hookowi after the death of Ian Curtis that it was his team will continue over from Joy Division. Another proof of this is the “Volcano” – summarizing in a perfect way the razor-sharp guitars with rumbling bass and drums motor skills.
Two of the most powerful recordings on the album is “Raised By Wolves” and “Cedarwood Road”. While they talk about youth Bono and his colleagues spent in Dublin, in a layer of American music more here than British influence. The first composition surprising dark tone and nervous rhythm native of the New York new wave, the second revived in turn echoes garage psychedelia, written out on lead guitar riffs and spatial production.
When does the “Sleep Like A Baby Tonight” by the time we feel that fired up … “Hall Of Mirrors” Kraftwerk. Shimmering synth chords bring sensual vocals Bono, subtle tones that complement the piano – and if the recording continues in this vein would have to deal with the charming synth-pop. At some point, however, hear a prolonged wailing guitars – and a whole becomes more rock style. Arrangement of fun are also the strength of “This Is Where You Can Reach Me Now” – subtly combining elements of reggae and new wave zdubowanego pop.
On the final U2 always leave something special. So it is this time. “The Troubles” sounds like a song from an unknown film by Quentin Tarantino – rousing soundtracks combining strings and girlish vocalise Lykke Li with a dreamy song Bono.
The title of the new disc is characterized U2 – this time the Irish was prepared for us to return to the days of his youth. Hence so much here references to music from the late 70s and 80s, from punk and reggae, the post-punk and synth-pop. All this, however, is produced by Danger modern Mouse’a, who gave individual songs coherent spatial and typical for this team, full stadium sound momentum. The big plus here are the melodies – the hit instantly catchy, energetic, and at the same time far from obvious. As a result, “Songs Of Innocence” is seen as one of the most successful boards U2 in the past two decades. And see how this material is well suited to live! (8/10)
