Hungarians will pay tax of 150 forints for each gigabyte of data? – Telix.pl

Hungarian economy minister Mihály Varga filed yesterday in parliament tax bill, which included a controversial provision on the taxation of the Internet – informs portal portfolio.hu.

Payment is expected to be 150 forints (2.06 zł) for each gigabyte of data downloaded. The rate will be charged for each additional gigabyte. The new tax will come into force from next year. The law has yet to be found also the upper limit of the tax for a single user – Hungarian media reported about 700 forints (9.62 zł) in the case of individual customers and 5,000 forints (68.75 zł) in the case of companies.

 The new tax will come into force from next year. Economy Minister Mihaly Varga estimates that the tax will affect the budget of 20 billion forints, or slightly more than 275.6 million zł. This is not a new tax, but the extension of an existing telecommunications tax, under which telecoms pay for each call made and SMS sent to their customers. To change the law encourages the Hungarian authorities is that fewer and fewer people are using SMS and phone calls, which have so far been covered by the tax, while people arrive communicating via the Internet.
  

The proposal responded very critical of the opposition. On Internet forums and social media sparked heated debate in which it was difficult to discern the government’s defense idea.

For companies this tax is often more than 100% of rental services. The Hungarian government is in huge trouble, is looking for easy money.
