Solar cells spray? It is a new technology – Virtual Poland

A team of British scientists from the University of Sheffield has developed a solution to enable the production of low-cost solar cells. For this new method is based on the spray. Is this the end of the silicon-based cells

She solar cell technology in spray is already known, but so far they have used organic semiconductors. For this reason, the use of the British compounds from the group of perovskites is a big step forward, because they combine high performance with low cost of production. There’s only one problem: the perovskites very rare in nature.

Most current solar cells are based on materials such as silicon, requiring large amounts of energy during the manufacturing process. Perovskites, by comparison, require significantly less energy and spray technology allows applying a photovoltaic layer on almost any surface.

Cells are based on perowskitach energy efficiency of up to 19 percent. This is clearly more than green cells (up to 10 per cent.), But on the other hand, is still somewhat less than the solar cells based on silicon (up to 25 per cent.). In contrast, spray developed by researchers has efficiency at 11 percent.

For now, however sprayed cell technology was developed in the comfort of laboratories, and commercial use is still a long way to go.
