European Rover Challenge (ERC) is a competition aimed at students, graduates and faculty members. Participating teams must design and build a Mars rover. Lasting two days competition was conducted in Podzamczu Chęciny near Kielce. Competed in the ten teams of Polish, Egypt, India and Colombia.
The winner team of the Technical University of Wroclaw robot Scorpio. The prize winners received, among others, check for a thousand dollars.
The team already has a lot of experience, because in competitions Mars rovers, among others, at American University Rover Challenge competitions, competed four times already. Road to Sunday’s victory, however, was not easy.
While in the contest competed as the first, is the first competition did not bring them points, among others, because of problems with the compass and connectivity. However filed an appeal, which judges found. Re successful passage, added them enough confidence that quickly grew up on the favorite occupations. In subsequent competitions already coped without problems.
– The whole year of hard work finally able to realize. Now we have to improve our jeep. These games have revealed several shortcomings. We will engage new team members to show some of its new applications – told PAP after the results of a team member Jędrzej Mountain.

For the rovers that are involved in being played for the first time the competition, prepared a special track, reminiscent of the surface of Mars. Robots have taken part in three spectacular off-road competitions, among others, have only be reached with the help of GPS and compass to a designated place, cross the track on time, take a sample of soil.

The members of the teams while performing the tasks they do not see their jeeps and control them remotely. Just like the real rovers on Mars. On each of the machines is a camera, so the players can see everything and properly direct the rover.
In 2015, another edition of the European Rover Challenge, also held in Poland in the same place. The event is organized Mars Society Poland in cooperation with Planet PR agency, the Office of Marshal Świętokrzyskie and the Regional Centre for Science and Technology in Podzamczu k. Chęcin.
The competition is the European version of the prestigious competition University Rover Challenge (URC), which held annually in the desert of Utah in the United States. For two years, the first prize in this competition is the team with the BTU of the rover Hyperion and Hyperion 2 Students from Bialystok also won the competition in 2011 with the rover Magma2.
