Just a few weeks after the release of the Radeon RX 480 from AMD, Nvidia enters the fight in this segment with its own product for players with less affluent portfolios. GeForce 1060 GTX has less RAM than the more expensive models, the RX 480 with 8 GB, but the power of the GTX 980 to erase the difference. It’s a pretty attractive proposition – or promises fail to satisfy?
The equipment is based on the system GP106 with the latest version of Pascal architecture, but in a reduced form of a chip that is more like its predecessor – GM206. Compared with top models reduced by half the number of CUDA, a total of 1,280 shaders. In the past, a similar approach resulted in “good, but not” very good “GTX 960. However, this time taken care improvement opportunities, and hence – a huge performance boost.
There is no question of anemic, 128-bit bus. Erected on a 192-bit interface and GDDR5 memory with a capacity of 8 Gbps, for a total of 192 GB / s. This is much more than the GTX 960, but still less than the RX 480 with 256 GB / s to 8 GB version. Fortunately, Nvidia gave up plans for a model with 3 GB of memory, putting 6 GB “standard”. All this translates into good balance of power and memory bandwidth.
We test version of the Founders Edition. The housing is similar to that of the more expensive models in the line of Pascal, but opted for a cheaper, plastic cover. The equipment still looks good, offering the same set of ports: three DisplayPorts, one DVI and HDMI 2.0. Disposed of connectors for SLI, which excludes such configuration. It is difficult to expect that players looking for a cheaper version bought it from the view of computers with multiple graphics cards.
A list of functions complement the already well-known, low demand for electricity. In 1070 GTX Nvidia was able to offer the power of the Titan X, but at a much lower TDP. GTX 1060 continues this trend by offering modest 120 W TDP, supplied from the power supply one sześciopinowym cable. Should be enough also for fans of overclocking, the manufacturer ensures that the achievement of 2 GHz for standard air cooling should not be a problem.
So we begin with 1080p resolution, in a duel with the GTX 960, 970 and 980, as well as RX 480 version 8 GB and a similar cost-R9 390. AMD has recently driver solving current problems RX 480, honing the optimization. The data in our tables are based on the latest version, but the difference in comparison with the version of the premiere is almost negligible 1-2 FPS.
Also check Rise of the Tomb Raider in DirectX 12. The game also enriched recently with support for asynchronous computation. This gives the cards AMD a bonus, but nothing spectacular – Nvidia still has a solid advantage.

GTX 1060 version Founders Edition is not available in Poland, and the non-reference versions will cost probably about 1500 zł.

Nvidia provides that “in recent games GTX 1060 by an average of 15 percent faster and consumes 75 percent. less power than the closest direct competitor. ” The power consumption will say later, but if we assume that “competitor” is the RX 480, the above sentence is not entirely true. Assassin’s Creed Unity is a performance improved by 15 per cent., And the Rise of the Tomb Raider – 23 percent. Elsewhere, we note, however, 11-12 percent. (Crysis 3, Far Cry Primal, The Witcher 3).
The Division is only 3 percent advantage for the GTX 1060, but the RX 480 has its victory – in the Ashes of the Singularity, not from today favoring AMD . Also Hitman version DX12 remains a mystery for the Nvidia card where “red” performs 11 percent. better.
Also promises the power of the GTX 980 is not the end of the check. Assassin’s Creed Unity falls identically, Far Cry and The Witcher 3 Primal work better on the latest device. Elsewhere, the advantage is, however, already GTX 980. Sometimes the difference is very small (The Division / Hitman), but Rise of the Tomb Raider more prefer the older model.

When you go to a resolution of 1440p situation repeats itself. If you’re talking about compared to the GTX 980, it’s Assassin’s Creed Unity, Ashes of the Singularity, Far Cry Primal and Hitman fall on the border of statistical error. The new card is about 3 percent faster in The Witcher 3, but 7 percent. slower Rise of the Tomb Raider.
RX 480 loses in Rise of the Tomb Raider (14 percent), Assassin’s Creed Unity and Crysis 3 (after 11 per cent.). Ashes of the Singularity and Hitman again not surprisingly, offer a victory on the side of AMD. Elsewhere advantage GTX 1060 less 2 and 6 percent, – respectively – The Division and Far Cry Primal.
In general, applications are so clear: GTX 1060 offers good performance in comparison with the RX 480, but AMD still it has an advantage in some games, while offering more memory. The new card Nvidia actually offers opportunities for the GTX 980, but the older line of Maxwell was famous for great overclocking, and in this respect Pascal had not shown anything yet impressive.

this does not mean that the overclock GTX 1060 will not offer any. Reaching the advertised level of 2 GHz is child’s play – in the core can reach up to 1050 MHz. Like the GTX 1070/1080, you can go even further, but the timing was quickly back to 2.05 GHz. The new card seems to use the same memory modules as GTX 1070 with no problems offering the overclock up to 9 Gbps, after the addition of 500 MHz in any program.
overclocked GTX 1060 effortlessly improves GTX 980, with standard clocks GTX 970 does not mention. Additional core 201 MHz and 500 MHz memory gives better performance 11-15 percent, depending on the reason. It must be remembered that older Maxwell were the overclock even better, and squeezing the maximum capabilities of the GTX 750 Ti or even Titan X often require positive only 200 MHz core and 400 MHz memory. Of course, unless you bought the factory overclocked unit.
The introduction of just such modifications GTX 980 allows the card again to lead the world, and we are not yet at the peak of the possibility of not deciding, for example, a higher voltage change . Spin + 200 / + 400 significantly improves also the results of the GTX 970 projecting slightly above the GTX 1060 on the company’s clocks.
So far, the purchase of one of the older models in the way sounded attractive, but now you can see that a noticeable overcome GTX 1060 will be needed just GTX 980. A and occasions still rather difficult. Moreover, an additional 2 GB of memory in a newer model probably be useful in the future, and Maxwell certainly can not count on the same support new technologies (DirectX 12, the calculation asynchronous).

Speaking of power consumption, Nvidia once again showed class. Based on our maximum readings, the change GTX 980 to GTX 1060 saves 75 at some points – and 60 W for the GTX 970.
We had not yet tested overclocked RX 480 for new drivers, but based on these old (apparently preferring PCI Express instead of the adapter cable), GTX 1060 offers much better results, with savings of 40 W. Even after overclock, GTX 1060 remains on the front, requiring only 18 more, while the RX 480 longer need 44 more.
These results indicate that the 1060 GTX needs less and operates at a lower load power supply, which should also be seen as an advantage for the Maxwell family. What’s more, the card is relatively small, increased the Founders Edition by large windmill. It announced, however, already shortened models, perfectly suitable for small computers, to bring in the living room.
